Reclaimed Hardwood
Don't we all share the memory of that warm and familiar attic that held our imaginations with Grandma's treasures? Now, you can have floors that are just as old and have that same feeling in your new or renovated home. The casual wide board look, the patina of age and a sense of the history of a previous life are brought alive with flooring made from reclaimed wood. Loaded with character, one of the great attractions of reclaimed woodwork is the chance to incorporate a sense of history into a project, while giving a new life to a disappearing natural resource.
Canoak Flooring Ltd. is the exclusive distributor in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northwestern Ontario for one of North America's leading manufacturers of reclaimed wood flooring products.
Reclaimed wood is not for every one or every budget. It is a specialty product that is generally more expensive than the equivalent floor made from newly cut trees. Species available include Heart Pine, Douglas Fir, Redwood, Chestnut, Cypress, White and Red Oak, Hickory and Beech.
The reclaimed wood comes from commercial, industrial and farm buildings that were built between the 1860's and the 1930's. This was a time the old growth forests were still being cut with a vengeance, and the steel 'I' beam had not become standard for heavy construction. Today, as these buildings fall to the wreckers, the structural timbers can often be salvaged and re-sawn to be used again. We all know the strain that our forests are under these days, particularly the old growth reserves. The use of reclaimed material is a choice we can make to reduce the impact on our woodlands. |
